An Underused Home Office Reimagined as a Personal Retreat

The Challenge: Rethinking a Traditional Home Office

Before renovation: home office with dark cabinetry, desk and window.

With retirement approaching, our client was ready to rethink how he used his home office.

The existing room was dominated by a large desk, dark cabinetry and filing cabinets. Although functional, the furniture took up much of the available space, making the room feel crowded and leaving little opportunity to enjoy it in other ways.

What had once been a dedicated workspace needed to become something more — a comfortable, personal retreat that better suited his changing lifestyle.

The challenge was to make a relatively small room feel more spacious and inviting while accommodating several different functions.

Understanding Our Client’s Needs

As our client transitioned into retirement, he envisioned spending less time working and more time enjoying the things he loved.

He still needed a practical workspace to catch up on emails and occasional work, but also wanted somewhere to read, watch television and relax. The room would also need to accommodate overnight guests.

Above all, he wanted a space that felt calm, comfortable and personal — somewhere he would genuinely enjoy spending time throughout the day.

The key was finding a way to bring these different needs together without compromising the room’s sense of comfort.

The Solution: Seeing the Possibilities

We started by taking a fresh look at the layout and considering how we could make better use of the available space.

Removing the existing closet freed up valuable floor space and led to the idea of custom built-in cabinetry that could accommodate everything our client needed.

The cabinetry incorporates a dedicated desk, filing storage, a tucked-away printer and open shelving for books, artwork and personal collections. By bringing these elements together into one cohesive design, we eliminated the need for several freestanding pieces of furniture and created a more open, functional layout.

This allowed us to introduce a comfortable sofa bed, providing a place to read, watch television or unwind, with the added flexibility of accommodating overnight guests.

The Inspiration: A Personal Connection to Sailing

Our client’s love of sailing, along with his artwork and personal collections, inspired the design and helped shape the character of the room.

We drew on the beautiful blue-greys and muted greens of Lake Ontario on a slightly overcast day, creating a calming palette that subtly reflects his connection to the water.

Rather than introducing an obvious nautical theme, we wanted these influences to come through in a more understated and personal way.

Painting the walls and custom cabinetry in the same soft blue-green creates a cohesive, enveloping feel, while warm brass lighting, natural textures and carefully selected furnishings bring warmth and contrast.

We also paid particular attention to lighting, incorporating adjustable wall sconces, integrated shelf lighting and a small table lamp to provide practical task lighting and a softer atmosphere for relaxing.

Artwork, collected objects and meaningful personal pieces add the finishing touches, giving the room character and a sense of history.

The Final Result: More Than a Home Office, Thoughtful Design, Multiple Functions

What I love most about this transformation is how differently our client can now enjoy the room.

What was once a conventional home office has become a comfortable, personal retreat — somewhere to start the morning, catch up on a little work, settle in with a book or relax in front of the television.

The room now serves several purposes without feeling like a multipurpose space. Everything has its place, and the combination of thoughtful space planning, custom cabinetry and personal details has created a room that feels both functional and inviting.

Most importantly, it’s a space that reflects our client’s interests and how he wants to spend his time in this next chapter of life.

For me, that’s what thoughtful interior design is all about.

It’s looking beyond what’s there, seeing what a space could become and finding creative ways to make it work beautifully for the people who live there.

At Marlow Page Interiors, we believe that even a single room, when thoughtfully reimagined, can make a meaningful difference in how you live and enjoy your home.
